Step 6: Dream and Soar

“For I know the plans I have for you, ” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

Just as an eagle flies above storms, we were born to rise high above our pain. Without the weight of our unforgiveness, we can soar high above the clouds; we can heal.

As we begin to heal, we begin to dream anew. The future is a reality that can be affected by our thoughts and actions. Giving voice to dreams will take time. Perhaps a support group or a few friends who believe in you can help you sort through those dreams. Gather with others whose focus in the future will help you train yourself to look forward and not backward. This is the time to expand your vision, go beyond your circumstances, and walk continually with Him so you can hear His voice direct you. Habakkuk 2:2-3, NKJV, leaves us with instruction: “Write the vision. And make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.”

Make a goal. Make specific ways to achieve it. To help me with my goals, my daughter suggested creating a Vision Board from magazine pictures and large letters with my goals. Post it in a visible spot. Spend fifteen minutes a day implementing your steps and working on your goals. Once a goal is achieved, go on to the next! In no time, you will know that your destiny is yours to achieve.

God has planted dreams in you to fulfill His purpose. This is the time when you’ll want to inspire others through your story. Volunteer at your church or with an organization. As you recreate the “new you,” build on your successes. Plan on returning to school; prepare for a new, challenging, different job, or travel for missions inside the United States and beyond. I attended graduate school in social work so that I could help others realize their possibilities. Challenging myself, I became one of the first African American women to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro!

No matter what you’ve been through, God will begin to bless you beyond measure because you’ve fulfilled His promise of forgiveness.
